From the wikipedia: "The word counseling (or counselling) comes from the Middle English counseil, from Old French conseil, from Latin cōnsilium; akin to cōnsulere, to take counsel, consult.[1] C. can be defined as a relatively short-term, interpersonal, theory-based process of helping persons who are fundamentally psychologically healthy resolve developmental and situational issues.[2]

There are probably as many definitions of c. as there are practitioners to describe it. The term was originally used by Frank Parsons in 1908. It was adopted by Carl Rogers in response to widespread prejudice in the U.S. against lay therapists and also because he was not then permitted by the psychiatry profession to call himself a psychotherapist.[citation needed] The difference between definitions of c. and psychotherapy is less significant than the practitioners' perceptions of their raison d'être."

"Some of the reasons for using e-mail c. as follows:

  1. E-mail c. provides personal space, comfort and safety for individuals who have difficulty discussing their personal problems directly with another person. For some individuals, it is easier to express themselves in writing than face-to-face or on the telephone. E-mail c. offers a level of personal privacy that goes beyond the capabilities of telephone therapy and face-to-face treatment provides.
  2. With e-mail c., you set the pace; you can take as much time as you want to compose your thoughts, reflect on your responses and those of your counselor, responding to them when you are ready. C. by e-mail provides an excellent way to track your progress and review past session notes.
  3. E-mail or online counseling guidelines are set by professional organizations. The California Board of Behavioral Sciences sets stringent guidelines for licensed professionals and provides information to consumers at their website.[4]
  4. Online or e-mail c. provides access to individuals who are physically handicapped, or those who will not or cannot access local treatment. People with speaking or hearing disabilities, those with concerns about the opinions of others can avail themselves of therapy.
  5. It is believed that misunderstandings and misinterpretations that occur in face-to-face therapy may be minimized using e-mail c. .[5]
  6. Formal therapies have been adapted for online use...
  7. C. by videophone or e-mail can be very helpful to the Deaf community. Deaf clients often have trouble locating Deaf therapists who are fluent in American Sign Language and who are experienced working with Deaf people."
